The Kenyan government is considering to reopen schools as the government monitors the number of COVID-19 infections.
Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha on Tuesday however, accused “unscrupulous cartels” for pushing for the reopening of schools.
According to Magoha, a greater percentage of the learning institutions have not met the required guidelines.
“Be sure that the reopening will be done when schools have met the specified guidelines. Nobody is going to intimidate us. At no time will the government allow cartels to dictate to the government what it should do as regards when and how to restart learning in schools,” said Magoha in a televised briefing while in Migori County to assess the state of preparedness by institutions of higher learning to reopen in the wake of the pandemic.
In July, the Ministry declared that its 2020 school calender was considered lost because of the coronavirus pandemic restrictions.
As a result, all primary and secondary pupils would return to class in January 2021.
Schools in Kenya were ordered closed on March 15.
