The Numbers behind the UEFA Champions League final

PSG take on Bayern Munich in this year’s UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon.

By the time the 2020 UCL Final kicks off on Sunday, an unprecedented 425 days will have passed on the 25th June last year

The competition that began with 79 teams, is down to just 2 – PSG and Bayern

It is the first time in 22 years that the UCL final has featured two reigning champions

The pandemic has ensured that this year’s final will be different from other Finals as it will be the first one played behind closed doors

It is the first time the fixture has been played later than June

And it is the first final played on Sunday

This is Bayern’s 11th appearance in a European Cup or Champions League final, carrying an equal number of wins and losses from the previous 10:

Wins – 2013, 2001, 1976, 1975, 1974

Losses – 2012, 2010, 1999, 1987. 1982

This is PSG’s first ever final in the competition becoming the 41st team to reach the showpiece final since it was founded in 1955. Bad news is that the last six teams competing in their maiden final have all lost.  The last first-time winners were Borussia Dortmund back in 1997 when they beat Juventus.

PSG are the 5th different team to reach the final and only once did a team from France win it – 1993 Olympique Marseille beat AC Milan 1-0

Bayern could become the first team in history to win 11 consecutive Champions league matches

Hansi Flick becomes only the 6th person to ever play for and manage the same side in a European Cup/Champions League final

Players to watch

Kylian Mbappe has been involved in 26 goals in 25 games played in UCL

He could become only the sixth player to score in the World Cup final and the UCL final

Robert Lewandowski has scored 15 goals in just 9 games played

PSG are on a record-equalling run of scoring in 34 consecutive matches in the European competition

Bayern are netting a record average of 4.2 times per game in this season’s Champions League

One thing is for sure, there will be goals on Sunday.
