Europa League: Manchester United seal a hardly fought 1-0 win over Copenhagen

Manchester United beat Copenhagen to book semi-final spot.

United were made to work hard for their 1-0 victory on Monday night that see them head to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

A stoic defensive performance by Copenhagen saw the match head to extra time after a goalless draw in normal time.

Bruno Fernandes’ spot kick was the difference as Manchester United advanced to the Europa League semis

His strike was his 11th goal for United since joining from Sporting Lisbon in January, in what has proven to be an inspired move for the Old Trafford club.

Fernandes has become United’s designated penalty taker, but decided to steer clear of his tried and tested ‘jump’ run-up for the spot-kick on Monday – instead driving the ball into the bottom corner without hesitation.

The man of the match was Copenhagen’s shot-stopper Karl-Johann Johnsson.

Johann made 13 saves over 120 minutes of action at the RheinEnergie Stadion in Cologne, a new record in the European competition.

The Swede was only beaten by Fernandes’ penalty in a night that he will certainly relish.

United advance to Sunday’s semi-final where they will meet either Wolves or Sevilla who meet on Tuesday night.
