Manchester City are in the race to sign Atletico Madrid’s defender Gimenez.
City will battle it out with Chelsea in bringing the rated defender from Spain to England.
Pep Guardiola is keen on bolstering his squad ahead of next season after a disastrous season saw them concede the title to rivals Liverpool.
It is understood that the Spaniard is keen on signing the Uruguayan this summer.
ESPN reports that Atletico Madrid are not interested in listening to any offers lower than the defender’s release fee.
Frank Lampard’s Chelsea is also in the race for the Uruguayan’s signature and will have to battle it out with City.
Man City are looking to add more experience to their backline to partner up with Aymeric Laporte. They recently had a bid accepted from Bournemouth for defender Nathan Ake but Guardiola isn’t done there.
Eric Garcia has made positive strides during the second half of the season however Guardiola wants to make another marquee signing at centre-back to take the pressure off the young Spaniard as he continues to learn.
Meanwhile, John Stones has fallen way out of favour at the Etihad while Nicolas Otamendi has failed to cement his place in the starting side.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard believes Gimenez would add strength and experience to his back line as he looks to continue his summer spending spree.
Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and are closing in on a £90m deal for Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid Kai Havertz.
Gimenez is 25 but ESPN report that Lampard believes signing him would be ‘like signing a 30-year-old centre-back’.
