Luiz sees RED as Arsenal get humbled by Manchester City

Arsenal beaten 3-0 by Manchester City as David Luiz’s foul sees him sent off.

It was a night to forget for Mikel Arteta as his return back to Manchester City is crippled with a dismal performance that saw his two players injured and David Luiz sent off.

Arsenal came to Etihad Stadium knowing that anything short of a win would direly affect the side’s push for next season’s Champions League.

It was the second match of the season restart after a three month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic that saw the season suspended back in March.

The players and officials observed a moment of silence for the lives lost to the pandemic and took a knee in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter

City began brightly, dominating the better part of the first half with Arsenal’s goalkeeper Bernd Leno parrying a series of shots to keep the side in the game.

Granit Xhaka was stretchered off in the opening minutes of the match after going over on his ankle while tracking back.

Brazilian defender Pablo Mari limped off in the 24th minute and in came Brazilian compatriot David Luiz.

Manchester City continued to run the show knocking on Arsenal’s door but the Gunners showed resilience with Leno being called to action over and over again.

City’s breakthrough came deep in the stoppage time of the first half when Luiz made a hash clearance with the ball falling on Raheem Sterling who got the first goal of the restart season.

The Brazilian was again at fault in the second half, when he hauled down Riyad Mahrez in the box with referee Anthony Taylor awarding City a penalty and sending off the Brazilian.

Kevin De Bruyne converted the resultant penalty, sending Leno the wrong way

Substitute Phil Foden sealed the three points deep into stoppage time crowning an impressive performance for Pep Guardiola’s side.

The result leaves Arsenal stuck in ninth position and have a daunting task to qualify for European competition next season.

Mikel Arteta will have to make plans for his next away visit to Brighton on Saturday
