Boxing: Dillian Whyte takes legal action against WBC

Dillian Whye has sought legal action against the WBC.

Whyte is demanding a mandatory title fight against WBC Champion Tyson Fury.

The 32-year old has sought legal redress to enforce his mandatory shot at the Gypsy King’s title.

Whyte is the current WBC’s interim champion and has been the number one contender under the sanctioning body since 2018.

Fury is the holder of  the WBC heavyweight title that he won when he blitzed Wilder in Las Vegas earlier this year

Last year, the WBC issued an order which guaranteed Whyte a mandatory shot at the full title by the end of February 2021.

Tyson Fury captured the WBC title in February with a master-class performance, stopping the Bronze-Bomber from Alabama Deontay Wilder.

Wilder exercised an immediate rematch clause, which forces a trilogy fight. The third bout with Fury is being targeted for dates in November and December.

Top Rank’s CEO Bob Arum, who co-promotes Fury, has made it clear that he doesn’t see much value in having his star fighter face Whyte.

Arum recently told Sky Sports that he was planning to have a conversation with the WBC, to further delay or even eliminate Whyte’s mandated shot – explaining to the sanctioning body that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic had placed the entire sport on hold for several months.

Arum is reportedly keen in seeing the materialization of a fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua in 2021. The two camps are said to have agreed the financial agreement of the fight that would crown an Undisputed Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman was unable to comment on the legal matter.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Mauricio said:

“There is a procedure with regards to the date of the mandatory in the heavyweight division. Upon direct advice of WBC legal counsel I am not in position to discuss any further.”
