Chelsea has agreed in principle with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

It is understood that Chelsea has agreed to sign the German forward in a deal worth £53million.

Werner, who seemed to be headed to Liverpool, has agreed to join Stamford Bridge with an attractive £180,000-a-week offer.

The German international has a £53million release clause which expires on Monday, June 15, which is believed to have been triggered by the Blues.

Chelsea capitalized on Liverpool’s hesitance on paying the striker’s full release clause.

The clause has to be triggered by June 15 and despite Liverpool previously being considered front-runners and Werner’s repeated praise of Jurgen Klopp’s team, he looks set to join their Premier League rivals.

Werner reportedly made up his mind to leave RB Leipzig in March and was desperate to play in the Champions League. He was keen on joining Jurgen Klopp’s side with the manager said to have made a video call to the striker.

The Reds are said to have eased interest in the prolific striker given the financial uncertainty caused by Covid-19. Chelsea on the other hand, has less financial worries due to their transfer ban last year and with their coffers full from the sale of Eden Hazard, they swooped in for Werner.

Reports indicate that the forward has been on Chelsea’s radar since December last year when the club’s scouts made favorable reports as they watched him and their other forward option Moussa Dembele during Red Bull Leipzig’s Champions League encounter with Lyon.

Werner has played for Germany at every age group level since he was 15 and established himself in the senior set up three years ago.

He joined Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016 and has since become one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga with 75 goals in 122 games.
