Serie A set June 20 as restart date

The Serie A has announced June 20 as the restart date for top-flight football.

The Govt on Thursday gave the okay for the league to hasten preparations of a return set on June 20 – just three days after Premier League is set to resume.

Serie A like many sporting events around the world were thrown into a three-month hiatus due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Italian clubs had been allowed to return to training earlier this month but a return to action seemed far off following a government directive banning all sporting action until June 15.

Italian Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora confirmed on Thursday that the league had an okay from the government to resume the 2019/20 football calendar.

He added that there was a possibility the resumption of the league, which was suspended on March 9, could be preceded by Italian Cup matches one week earlier.

Spadafora made the announcement after a conference call with representatives from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the players’ association and the Serie A league.

‘Italy is starting up again and it’s only right that football can also get going. In the light of this we can say that the championship can start again on June 20. There’s then the possibility that the Italian Cup semifinals and final can be played on June 13 and 17, ‘ said Spadafora.
