Kenya and Uganda are experiencing national power outage following a system disturbance.

In separate statements on Saturday, Kenya Power and Umeme in Uganda said they had lost power supply in the national grid.

Kenya Power said it was due to a system disturbance that occurred on their transmission network at 5.49 am.

“We have been advised by our supplier Uganda Electricity Transmission Company limited of a nationwide outage,” said Umeme.

According to Kenya Power, its engineers identified a technical fault at a section of the main high voltage transmission power line that evacuates power to Nairobi from Olkaria power generation sites in Naivasha.

“An electricity conductor came off the support insulators and clashed on the tower,” said Eng. Charles Mwaura, General Manager, Network Management.

The fault, which occurred near Kiambu town led to power loss on the critical power line thus overloading other power generators countrywide.

Both utility companies apologized for the inconvenience caused.
