Lipa Mdogo Mdogo: Safaricom Partners with Google, Teleone to Offer 4G Smartphones

Safaricom has unveiled a new campaign ‘Mwelekeo Ni Internet’ to launch a range of affordable 4G smartphones under its Lipa Mdogo Mdogo financing plan

Safaricom is partnering with Google and Teleone to give customers access to quality 4G phones with a flexible payment plan.

In an initiative dubbed Lipa Mdogo Mdogo, Kenyans who earn their wages daily will be able to acquire a range of smartphones and pay in easy daily installments for as low as Ksh20.

“Data penetration is still not at the right level,” Chief Executive Peter Ndegwa announced Wednesday during an investor briefing.

The initiative will be launched in June.

“We intend to bridge the gap for these consumers by offering a device financing program dubbed the Lipa Mdogo Mdogo campaign.”

The listed telco at the Nairobi bourse introduced the Neon Kicka 4 in 2018. It retails at Ksh.3,499. Other brands within the category include Neon Ray, Neon Nova and the Neon Storm.

In addition, it partnered with Google to deliver an optimized variety of Android known as Android (Go edition) on the Neon devices. Android (Go edition) helps Neon smartphone users control their data usage by managing which apps can use data through the “Data Saver” feature and compressing data through the Chrome browser.

Ndegwa further said they are focused on using these technologies to leapfrog the traditional ways in which they addressed business and societal challenges.

“We will use global trends and innovative digital enterprise solutions such as Big Data and Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to create new ways in which challenges are analysed and solved,” he noted.

Revenue from mobile data rose 12.1 percent to 40.7 billion shillings, after recording 21 percent growth in the second half.


The latest data from the Economic Survey 2020 released by National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani on Tuesday, coverage of the fourth generation (4G) network improved drastically following the significant deployment of transceivers by the operators from 7,469 in 2018 to 17,744 in 2019.

During the period, mobile cellular penetration increased by 7.9 per cent to 114.70 per 100 inhabitants in 2019 registering a slower growth compared to 12.3 per cent registered in 2018.
