Ronaldinho has been released from prison in Paraguay after spending 32 days over forging passports.

The former Brazilian international was charged alongside his brother for attempting to enter the South American nation with fake passports in March.

The pair were facing a six-month prison sentence but were released and are to be held on house arrest in a hotel for the remaining time.

In their appeal, the player’s legal team asked the court to release the former Ballon D’or winner due to his status as a former global star.

Since retiring from football in 2015, the goofy buck-toothed played that awed and wowed the football world has been faced with a series of controversies that have tainted the image of the one-time football great.

In the same year, he and his brother were convicted of illegally building a fishing trap at Lake Guaiba without proper licensing in a permanent preservation area. They were handed a £6.9m fine in 2018 which so far remains unpaid, leading Brazil’s Superior Court of Justice to seize Ronaldinho’s passport.

He made headlines in 2018 for reportedly marrying two wives. One of the wives would then leave him citing aggression and opened a legal case to take one third of his earnings.

A forensic search on his bank accounts would reveal that the 2002 World Cup winner with Brazil only had a balance of just over £5.

In 2019, Ronaldinho made public support of controversial president Jair Bolsonaro. He would then have 57 of his properties, including his Brazilian and Spanish passports which were confiscated from him because of unpaid taxes and fines.

Ronaldinho was arrested on March 6, alongside his brother for using forged passports with Ronaldinho, through his lawyers, arguing that he did not know he had committed an offence.

Ronaldinho played for PSG, Barcelona and AC Milan carrying an infectious smile on his face, dancing his way past opponents with ease, bringing joy to fans across the world.

He won one Ballon D’or and two FIFA World Player of the Year awards, two LaLiga titles and a Champions league crown with Barcelona. He was also instrumental in leading Brazil to lifting the World Cup in 2002.
