Jambojet, Safarilink and AirKenya Airlines have temporarily suspended their domestic flights due to the continuing coronavirus outbreak and the cessation of all movements by the National Security Council.
The cessation of all movement by road, rail or air in and out of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kilifi and Kwale counties for the next 21 days was announced on Monday by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
“In light of this, Jambojet will temporarily suspend all its operations for the period between 07th – 30th April 2020,” said low-cost carrier Jambojet.
“We, therefore, regret to inform all our customers and business partners that all the flights for the said period are cancelled with immediate effect,” the statement seen by Khusoko read in part.
On the other hand, Alex Avedi, CEO of Safarilink urged its customers to consider re-scheduling their travel plans to a later date at no extra cost in April. He said the value of these tickets will remain valid for a period of 12 months from the 07th April 2020.
“We have cancelled most of the flights mainly because most lodges and parks which form part of our key destinations in the country have also closed down,” Avedi said.
As of Monday, Kenya had confirmed 158 cases of the Covid-19 virus and its crucial tourism and farm export businesses have already been hit by the impact of the outbreak.
However, according to President Kenyatta, “The movement of food supplies and other cargo will continue as normal during the declared containment period through road, railway and air.
“Any cargo-carrying vehicle or vessel shall be charged to a single driver and designated assistants; all of whom shall be designated as such in writing by the owner or operator of the said vehicle or vessel with reference to that vehicle or vessel,” the President said.
