FIFA set to extend the 2019/20 season and the transfer window INDEFINITELY

  • FIFA is considering means of having the season concluded
  • The body also plans to change the dates of the transfer window

Football world governing body, FIFA, is planning to announce an extension of the 2019/20 football season.

In a report, FIFA wishes to set the date when the season will resume and end as well as give new dates to when the transfer window will commence.

This is meant to allow clubs to negotiate contracts with players whose contracts are set to end on June 30.

The said plans will also mean that the concept floated by pundits of having the season rendered null and void are less likely to materialize.

The plans means the chances of the season being rendered null and void are less likely

In view of this, Premier League and other leagues, which are currently on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, will have a chance of playing out the remaining fixtures and avoid paying back millions of shillings to TV broadcasters.

The move by the governing body will also allow clubs to negotiate fresh contracts with their players whose contracts are set to end on June 30.

Pedro and Willian are among a host of Premier League stars who are out of contract on June 30

Should the season be resumed, the matches may be played behind closed doors without fans present – a move that is still not fully supported by most clubs that insist that they will only resume play with fans present.

While all this information will be shared comprehensively in two days, Belgium cancelled their football season last week and crowned Club Brugge as champions. Brugge had a runaway 15 point lead at the top of the standings with one round of matches left to play.

In La Liga, after 27 matches, Barcelona hold a two-point lead over archrivals Real Mardid in the battle for the league title. In France, run-away leaders PSG lead the table with a 12 points gap over Olympic Marseille.
