The Mayor of Bergamo has labelled the Atalanta v Valencia match ‘a coronavirus biological bomb’.

Giorgio Gori, the Mayor of Bergamo – a city in northern Italy, labelled the fixture a ‘biological bomb’ as he believes that it resulted in the spread of the virus in Italy and Spain.

The UCL first leg fixture played at the San Siro Stadium on 19th February attracted over 40,000 fans from Spain and Italy.

Bergamo City is the worst-hit province in the country, recording 6,728 confirmed cases.

Mayor Gori says the UCL first leg game resulted in a high virus spread.

The Italian outfit was playing their Champions League fixtures at San Siro in Milan because their stadium was undergoing renovation.

Over 6,820 people have succumbed to the virus in Italy, while 2,991 have died in Spain.

The two nations have recorded a high number of deaths due to the virus: Spain is now behind China, with their death toll rising daily.
