  • Kipsang is the sixth fastest marathon runner in history.
  • Has a personal best of two hours three minutes and 13 seconds.

Kenyan Wilson Kipsang, former marathon world record holder has been provisionally suspended for whereabouts failures and tampering with samples, the Athletics Integrity Unit said on Friday.

A Provisional Suspension is when an Athlete or other Person is suspended temporarily from participating in any competition or activity in Athletics prior to a final decision at a hearing conducted under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct.”

Kipsang has won twice the London Marathon with a personal best of two hours, 3 minutes, 13 seconds.  His time of 2:03.23 at the 2013 Berlin Marathon stood as the world record for a year. He has also won the 2014 New York Marathon and 2017 Tokyo Marathon.

A Provisional Suspension imposed in a non-doping case does not in any way abrogate the presumption of innocence and it is not an early determination of guilt. Rather, it is an order made on a precautionary basis to safeguard the interests of the sport.

According to Capital FM, this is not the first time Kipsang has fallen under the doping radar. In September 2014 he escaped punishment when he missed an out-of-competition drug test.

He risks a two-year ban for this latest infringement if proven.

His management stressed he has not failed a drugs test and added: “No prohibited substance was found.”
