Geoffrey Kamworor, Joyciline Jepkosgei Triumphant at New York Marathon 2019

Kenyans Joyciline Jepkosgei won the women’s New York City Marathon race completing her debut in 2 hours 22 minutes 38 seconds, seven seconds and Geoffrey Kamworor won the men’s event for the second time in three years in 2:08:13 on Sunday.

In her debut race, she clocked 2:22:38 ahead of Mary Keitany by 55 seconds.

Keitany finished second in 2:23:32. Ethiopia’s Ruti Aga finished third in 2:25:51.

Jepkosgei’s time was described as the second-fastest in race history, seven seconds off the course record, and is the fastest debut time in New York.

“I am happy to win the race,” Jepkosgei said.

In the men’s elite race, Geoffrey Kipsang Kamworor won his second men’s title in three years in 2:08:14.

The 26-year-old Kenyan becomes a two time champion in the marathon. In September, the three-time half marathon world champion broke the old mark by 17 seconds by running in a time of 58:01 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Albert Korir finished second, and Ethiopian non-elite runner Girma Bekele Gebre was third.
