A key challenge to a Low-carbon future for Kenya is plastics – CEO Kariuki Ngari
Standard Chartered Kenya has taken up the plastics challenge by banning the single-use plastic from its workplace; starting off at its Chiromo Head Office in Westlands, Nairobi.
The company estimates that through the initiative described as “A tremendous step”, will see more than 1,500 employees learn how to live ‘at least 8 hours of the day, without single-use plastic’.
“These stakes are high when it comes to our shared environmental challenges and the one planet we all must reside in. It is indeed ‘business unusual,’ and there is no better time than now to begin,” said Standard Chartered Kenya CEO Kariuki Ngari via his Linkedin page.
According to the bank’s philosophy, supporting sustainable and responsible growth, including delivering the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs’), represents a significant opportunity for them.
“We are committed to promoting economic and social development in the markets we serve, doing so sustainably and equitably in line with our purpose and three-valued behaviours: ‘Never settle’, ‘Better together’ and ‘Do the right thing’. This sustainability philosophy sets out how we integrate sustainability into our organisational decision-making.”
