Members of the Public have been invited to present their views on the Data Protection Bill, 2019.
The bill seeks to provide for protection of personal information and hereby give effect to the constitutional right of a person not to have information relating to their family or private affairs unnecessarily required or revealed as enshrined in Article 31 of the Constitution of Kenya and Article 17 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights; which Kenya is among the more than 160 signatories.
Some of the proposals in the bill include the establishment of the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner to oversee implementation of the Act. It would also be responsible for the enforcement of the legislation.
The Bill is among two that the National Assembly is seeking views on as part of public participation.
The Crops (Amendment) Bill, 2019 seeks to ammend the First Schedule to the Crops Act, 2013 to include Achiota, locally known as ‘Mrangi’ because of its bright red fruits and is grown largely at the Coast but its potential has not been fully utilised.
