Lupita Nyong’o, Kenyan actress, participated in her first Book Expo America 2019 signing at the Javits Center for her debut children’s book Sulwe.

Nyong’o on her Twitter feed said the book was ‘important to her’.

“My first #Sulwe signing! This story is near and dear to my heart and it was wonderful to begin to share it today. The best children’s books plant a seed for children to grow and draw from throughout their lives. If Sulwe does that for even one young reader, I would be delighted.✨” she posted.

According to Lupita, she wrote Sulwe to inspire children to love the skin they are in and to see the beauty that radiates from within.

Sulwe is a Dhuluo word meaning “Star.”

The Book’s cover illustration was done by Vashti Harrison, an artist, and filmmaker from Onley, Virginia.

In January 2018, Lupita revealed that she would be writing a book about the struggles she experienced with her complexion and self image in 2014. The book will be available on October 1st, 2019.
