Cosmetics, liquor, fruit juices, and non-alcoholic beverages are set to become more expensive as the National Treasury has proposed to increase the current rates of excise duty stamps by 300 per cent. The Excise Duty (Excisable Goods Management System) (Amendment) Regulations, 2023 propose to raise the stamp fees for cosmetics from 60 cents per stamp to KSh2.50, fruit juices and non-alcoholic beverages will go up by 267 per cent to KSh2.20 from 60 cents. Tea earnings increased by 28.8 per cent to KSh 136.6 billion in 2022 from KSh 106 billion in 2021 at the Mombasa Auction. According to the East African Tea Traders Association (EATTA), during the review period, farmers sold 481.9 million kilogrammes of tea at an average price of $2.29 (Ksh283.502), an increase from the $1.99 (Ksh246.362) registered in 2021.
