President Uhuru Kenyatta is set to re-open the historic Nyayo National Stadium after years of renovation.
The stadium, which is historic in the country’s sporting industry, has been given a face lift to an international and modern status.
Nyayo stadium was closed to the public paving room for renovation in 2017 in preparation to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championships (Chan) but this never happened as the showpiece was later moved to Morocco.
And three years later, Uhuru will be presiding over the re-opening of the revamped filed on Saturday, September 26.
“His Excellency the President of the Republic of Kenya will preside over the reopening ceremony of the Nyayo national Stadium…
“This is to invite your federation to attend this important function to the sporting fraternity. Please extend the invitation to your players,” acting Commissioner of Sports Gerald Gitonga said in a letter addressed to secretary generals of sports federations in the country.
Those willing to attend have been urged to don tracksuits, preferably showing Kenyan colours.
Over the years, the stadium has been opened partially for various functions including a clash between giants AFC leopards and Gor Mahi, Beyond Zero Marathon and a national event.
Kenya has a bad reputation with its sporting facilities as many of them have been left to ruin to the extent that they are not fit for use.
The iconic City Stadium lies in ruins, despite years of concerted efforts of renovation, and has not hosted any matches for ages.
The Moi Sports Centre-Kasarani has had a share of its own when it comes to being in a poor state. Recently, there were photos showing how grass was overgrowing some sections of the terraces, leaking roofs, dry and vandalized taps not to mention the bas state of restrooms.
With the reopening of Nyayo National Stadium, sports enthusiasts hope that the same may be extended to other facilities across the country.
