The GSMA has conferred its Lifetime Achievement Award on Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, recognising his transformative role in reshaping global telecommunications and expanding connectivity for billions worldwide.
A Rare Honour in Telecom
Bestowed on only a handful of leaders in GSMA’s history, the award celebrates contributions that leave a lasting mark on the global communications ecosystem. The presentation took place at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, attended by His Majesty King Felipe VI of Spain, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Catalonia’s President Salvador Illa, and global industry leaders.

Building Airtel into a Global Powerhouse
Mittal has built Bharti Airtel into one of the world’s leading mobile operators, with operations across India and Africa. Airtel now ranks among the top three globally, serving more than 600 million customers and covering over two billion people.
He pioneered mobile expansion across emerging markets and served as GSMA Chairman (2017–2018), championing policies that encouraged investment, innovation, and digital inclusion. His leadership strengthened the industry’s commitment to connecting the unconnected.
Mittal previously received the GSMA Chairman’s Award in 2008 and 2016 for his outstanding contribution to the mobile industry. He was also honoured at Mobile World Congress in 2019 for his Chairmanship.
Mittal’s Reflections
On receiving the award, Mittal said:
“I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition and sincerely thank the GSMA. I accept it not only as a personal milestone, but as a tribute to India’s telecom journey, the collective spirit of Bharti, and the rise of Indian telecom companies on the global stage. This award belongs to the customers we serve, the teams who built our institutions, and the partners who believe in the transformative power of connectivity.”
He added that telecommunications expand opportunity, place essential services in the hands of individuals, and unlock human potential. “As innovation accelerates, we will continue to work with partners and stakeholders to ensure growth advances equity and creates lasting opportunity for generations to come.”
