Zaad Holdings will acquire the remaining 60 percent stake in East Africa Seeds Group (EASEED), completing its takeover of the Kenya‑headquartered seed company.
The move follows a capital injection by a consortium of investors through Zaad Holdings, enabling the firm to secure majority ownership.
Zaad Holdings first entered East Africa Seeds in 2019 with a 40 percent stake. The latest transaction will give the agribusiness investor full control, strengthening its position in Africa’s agricultural inputs value chain and expanding its footprint in seed production and distribution.
EASEED: A Regional Pioneer Since 1972
Founded in 1972 by the late Mr. L.V. Shah, East Africa Seeds began with a commitment to provide quality seeds and services to farmers across East Africa. Over five decades, the company has grown into one of the leading seed producers in East and Central Africa, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
EASEED’s expansion since 1995 has established branches in Tanzania (Arusha, Mbeya, Mwanza), Uganda (Kampala), Rwanda (Kigali), and Zambia (Lusaka). Beyond East Africa, the company has extended its reach to Ethiopia, Eritrea, Burundi, Somalia, Sudan, DRC Congo, and Zambia, making it one of the continent’s most recognized vegetable seed companies.
In 2003, EASEED diversified further by creating Agriscope (Africa) Ltd, a dedicated agrochemical division designed to serve farmers more efficiently. Today, the company operates a wide distribution network of dealers and stockists across major cities and towns, ensuring farmers have access to high‑quality seeds and crop protection products.
Innovation and Farmer Support
EASEED’s success has been driven by its research and development team, which continues to evolve high‑yielding varieties suited to diverse agro‑climatic conditions across Africa. Partnerships with multinational seed companies have broadened its product portfolio, meeting the growing demand for resilient, climate‑adapted seed varieties.
With a team of qualified administrators, technical experts, and field staff, EASEED ensures timely delivery of products at competitive prices. Its mission remains clear: to help farmers “reap the best from Africa’s Best,” while boosting agricultural productivity and food security across the region.
Strategic Significance of the Acquisition
Zaad Holdings’ full acquisition of EASEED underscores investor confidence in Africa’s agricultural inputs sector. The deal positions Zaad to leverage EASEED’s established distribution network, research capabilities, and farmer relationships to accelerate growth in hybrid seed adoption and strengthen food security across the continent.
