China Village has launched its second hypermarket at Juja City Mall, marking another step in the expansion of Chinese-owned retailers across Kenya’s rapidly growing retail sector.
Expanding Retail Footprint
The new outlet, located on the mall’s first floor, offers an array of products, including:
- Electronics and household goods
- Fashion and footwear
- Furniture and hardware tools
- Gaming products and accessories
Strategic Expansion
Henry Chen, Managing Director of the Juja branch, said the hypermarket is part of a broader plan to strengthen China Village’s presence in Kenya’s competitive retail market:
“This is China being brought closer to Kenyans. We want to keep stocking quality products that meet customer needs.”
Chen noted that the festive season launch was deliberate, aimed at showcasing affordability and variety. The store is running a 20% discount promotion until January 1 to drive holiday traffic.
Nationwide Growth Plans
China Village, which already operates a branch on Mombasa Road, plans to expand to Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, and Eldoret, with two additional branches expected in 2026.
Modern Retail Experience
The Juja hypermarket integrates virtual reality gaming, designed to attract younger shoppers seeking immersive experiences.
Store supervisor Vanessa Nasyombe said:
“We have modern gaming services utilising Virtual Reality at affordable rates. Come and reimagine the future.”
The outlet also features a food section offering both Chinese and Kenyan cuisines, adding to its one-stop shopping appeal.
Retail Sector Context
China Village joins competitors such as China Square and Pandamart, reflecting the growing influence of foreign-owned retailers in Kenya. Competitive pricing, broad assortments, and aggressive expansion strategies have helped them capture households facing cost-of-living pressures.
Juja, with its large student population and expanding estates, has become a prime retail hub for young consumers and first-time homeowners.
