MTN Uganda, a unit of South Africa’s MTN Group, has launched the first 5G network in the East African country.
The introduction of 5G brings faster data speeds and lower latency to Ugandan users.
“Our first sites went live today in Lugogo and Bugolobi, and all our customers in these areas using 5G-enabled devices can begin to experience the joy and benefits of 5G,” says MTN Uganda.
Sylvia Mulinge, MTN Uganda’s CEO, revealed the company’s ambitious plans to fully expand 5G coverage in Kampala by the end of 2024.
Moreover, MTN aims to convert all its base sites in major cities to 5G over the next two years.
This significant milestone marks a new era for internet connectivity in Uganda, offering enhanced experiences and paving the way for digital advancements in the region.
4G LTE network in Rwanda
In Rwanda, MTN Rwanda launched its 4G LTE network in line with the government’s national broadband policy and strategy.
The policy aims to transform Rwanda into a knowledge-based economy by providing all Rwandan communities with access to broadband services based on a sustainable infrastructure of Information and Communications Technologies.
Mapula Bodibe, CEO, MTN Rwanda, said, “By launching the next generation 4G LTE technology, we are not only investing in the network, but we are also, and most importantly, investing in leading digital solutions for Rwanda’s progress.”

As of the end of March, MTN Rwanda had 6.9 million mobile subscribers, 2.2 million active data subscribers, and 4.4 million mobile money subscribers.
Airtel Rwanda was the first mobile operator to obtain its 4G licence.
