The African Football Confederation (CAF) has moved the dates of the next Africa Cup of Nations finals to January 2024 and not 2023, president Patrice Motsepe said on Sunday.
The tournament was to be hosted in June-July 2023, the height of the rainy season in the Ivory Coast.
“We took a lot of advice, and we decided we cannot take a risk,” Motsepe told a news conference.
“We don’t want to run the risk that our top competition will be washed out.”
Motsepe also announced the creation of an African Super League next season, formally launching on Aug 10.
Africa Women Cup of Nations
Motsepe also announced that the 2022 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) prize money has been increased by 150% to $500,000.
Motsepe said, “We are bringing this competition for the first time in Morocco and we have increased the number of nations to twelve (12) and we have also increased the prize money for the women competition by a hundred and fifty per cent (150%), so the winning nation will get hundred and fifty per cent more than they received in the past….”
DStv and GOtv customers can look forward to all the 2022 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations matches being held in Morocco from July 2 to 23.
