The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is back, with at least 25,000 people expected to participate in the annual event.
The 19th edition will be launched on Saturday, July 2 at the Nairobi Arboretum ahead of the marathon on October 30.
According to the marathon’s website, “It will consist of both a virtual and a physical marathon. For the first time in two years, the physical marathon is back in full capacity and will be run on Sunday, October 30 2022.”
The marathon will feature 10km, 21km and 42km races for both male and female participants, a 21km wheelchair race for males and females and the 5km Family Fun Run race.
Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has featured 250,000 participants in 18 editions since its inception in 2003.
Standard Chartered Bank Kenya discloses that the Nairobi Marathon may be the first in Africa to measure its impacts across a broad range of sustainability impacts.
Some of the impacts investigated include waste, climate and charitable donations.
“Our ambition is to embed sustainability into everything we do and, as such, our Marathon platform has set the goal to be ‘The most sustainable running platform in the world’,” part of the Sustainability Performance Report dubbed setting the pace reads.
Through the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon, the bank aims to drive positive change by delivering mass-participation sporting events that improve health and wellbeing.
In addition, providing a sense of achievement to participants; that is open and inclusive and stimulates community engagement, civic engagement and local economic development.
Finally, providing a platform to inspire others to better themselves; promotes innovation, collaboration and solidarity amongst participants and spectators; and positively impacts the natural environment.
All marathon proceeds go towards the FutureMakers Initiative. Standard Charted Bank Kenya’s goal is to raise 50 million USD by 2023 to tackle inequality and promote economic inclusion for our younger generation.
Futuremakers is Standard Chartered’s community initiative that supports women and youth through education, employability and entrepreneurship.
In last year’s hybrid format, over 5,600 participants from different parts of Kenya registered and participated in the virtual marathon. The physical event had 2,500 participants from other parts of the world.
