Lewis Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix following a race which saw him and F1 title rival Max Verstappen collide on the first lap.

Verstappen crashed out when Mercedes driver Hamilton dived down his inside on the entry to Copse at 180mph, with the British driver tagging the rear of the Red Bull car.

The Belgian-Dutch driver was sent out of control and crashed into the wall in the high-speed accident.

Hamilton was given a 10-second time penalty for causing a collision.

Verstappen, 23, remained in his cockpit for several moments before emerging and was taken away in an ambulance.

Red Bull said Verstappen had been “taken to a local hospital for further precautionary tests” after being assessed at the track’s medical centre.

Hamilton denied Charles Leclerc a sensational victory in the British Grand Prix.

Leclerc led the majority of the restarted race, including while managing an intermittent engine problem, but was unable to resist Hamilton’s late charge back to the front following his lengthy pitstop, where he had served his penalty.
