Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0 the Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in Brazil to qualify to the knockout stages.

Papu Gomez finished off a move that started with Lionel Messi who teed up Angel Di Maria to roll a through pass to Gomez who slotted the ball into the net in the 10th minute.

Argentina, now unbeaten in 16 games, looked sharp in patches but did not really dominate the game. The early goal gave the side a advantage but Paraguay played really well to remain in contention and came close on a couple of occasions but largely failed trouble the ‘keeper.

The result put Argentina on top of Group A. Paraguay, which has played only two games, still has a good chance of progressing to the knockouts.

Elsewhere, Uruguay settled for a 1-1 draw against Chile. Eduardo Vargas put the Chileans ahead in the 26th minute before an own-goal by Arturo Vidal pulled Uruguay back into the match.
