Raheem Sterling’s second-half strike gave the Three Lions a vital win over Croatia at the Wembley Stadium.
The Manchester City forward gave England the lead in the second half when he ran on to a reverse pass from Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips and putting the ball in the net.
It was Sterling’s first goal for England at a major tournament. The winger was surprisingly named in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up and repaid the manager’s faith with an impressive display during the match.
Croatia struggled to create chances and was visibly missing Mario Mandzukic who retired from international football after the 4-2 loss to France in the World Cup final three years ago.
Real Madrid’s Lukas Modric struggled to pull the strings for Croatia with Ivan Perisic and Ante Rebic struggling to create any impact in the match.
The result sends Southgate’s side top of Group D. fellow group members Scotland take on the Czech Republic on Monday.
