SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to seeing all the action from the Golden Gala – Pietro Mennea event of the 2021 IAAF Diamond League season, set for the Stadio Luigi Ridolfi in Florence, Italy on the evening of Thursday 10 June 2021.
SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Athletics fans, with an unparalleled selection of action from around the world.
The Golden Gala – Pietro Mennea is the third leg of the 2021 Diamond League season, following on from the Muller Grand Prix Gateshead in the United Kingdom and the Doha Diamond League in Qatar last month.
From an African perspective, the focus will fall on a crunch battle in the Women’s 1500 metres featuring Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon and Beatrice Chepkoech, as well as Sifan Hassan (Holland) and Laura Muir (Scotland).
“I did my personal best here in Doha, so it’s really, really great to be here,” Kipyegon said after triumphing in an impressive 1:58.26 in the Women’s 800 metres in Qatar. “I am training so hard and hoping to do my best, so I am putting all my mind on it. The pandemic wasn’t easy but we always try to be great.”
Other feature events to look out for include the Men’s High Jump, which will see a pitched battle between Mutaz Essa Barshim (Qatar), gold medalist of the last two World Championships in London and Doha, and the Eastern European duo of Russian bronze and European champion Ilya Ivanyuk and European indoor champion Maksim Nedasekau (Belarus).
The Women’s Pole Vault will see a duel between the Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi (Greece) and the Russian world champion Anzhelika Sidorova. Stefanidi has already triumphed at the Golden Gala in the 2016 and 2017 editions, before winning the Olympic gold in Rio and the World Championship gold in London with her best measurement of 4.91. Sidorova closed the 2021 indoor season at the top of the world lists by jumping 4.90, five centimetres from the personal best of 4.95.
The event will also mark exactly 40 years to the day since the great Sebastian Coe, the current IAAF president, set a world record of 1: 41.73 in the Men’s 800 Metres in 1981 in Florence – a time only surpassed twice since: by Denmark’s Wilson Kipketer in 1997 and current record holder David Rudisha of Kenya at the London Olympics in 2012.
