Unbeaten AC Milan leapfrogged city rivals Inter and returned to the top of Serie A thanks to Theo Hernandez’s 92nd-minute winner against Lazio on Wednesday night.
After Antonio Conte’s side moved two points clear after beating Verona 2-1 earlier on in the evening, Ante Rebic had given Stefano Pioli’s men the perfect start with an emphatic header after 10 minutes.
Hakan Calhanoglu then converted from the penalty spot to make it 2-0 to Milan after it was decided that visiting defender Patric had handled following a VAR review.
Lazio then had a chance to score from the spot just after the midway point of the first half as Pierre Kalulu was adjudged to have stepped on Joaquin Correa.
Ciro Immobile stepped up, but his penalty was superbly tipped away by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
However, the danger was not clear and the ball was worked back in for Luis Alberto to halve the deficit.
Immobile then made amends 12 minutes after the break, firing home for his ninth league goal of the campaign to make it 2-2.
But Milan would not settle for a point and stole victory deep into stoppage time.
Left back Hernandez powered home a Calhanoglu corner kick to snatch all three points and make it 14 league games without defeat for Milan this term.
The Milan players all piled on top of Hernandez in joyful celebration after his late winner, with the Rossoneri heading into the festive period a point above Inter as they chase a first league title since 2011.
