Edinson Cavani nets late winner to give Manchester United a deserved comeback win against Southampton.

Shades of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time showed on Sunday afternoon as Manchester United rallied from two goals down to beat Southampton 3-2 at the St Mary’s stadium.

The Saints went two goals ahead, deservedly, in the first half as the hosts raided the visitors with a series of attacks.

Jan Bednarek opened the scoring with a superb header from James Ward Prowse corner kick in the 22nd minute.

The Saints continued to probe United’s defence and were rewarded with a second goal when Ward Prowse’s free-kick flew over the wall and into the net, causing David De Gea an injury as the Spaniard attempted to keep the ball out.

The Spaniard would be called into action two minutes later to keep off a shot from Moussa Djenepo.

At half-time, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a two changes – sending on Dean Henderson for the injured De Gea and Edinson Cavani for Mason Greenwood.

And just like during the great Ferguson’s reign, the substitution would pay off.

Cavani sent a cross into the area that found Bruno Fernandes who had time to bring it down and send a shot into the net in the 58th minute. The Uruguayan would in the 73rd minute remind the world why he was among the most feared forwards in Europe with a superb glancing header to bring the match even.

The forward would then seal the three points in the dying minutes of the game when he met a cross from Marcus Rashford and powered it into the net.

The result leaves United in seventh position with 16 points, while Southampton are in fifth with 17 points.
