Leicester beat Zorya Luhansk as James Maddison, Harvey Barnes and Iheanacho on target.

English midfielder James Maddison inspired the Foxes to a comprehensive 3-0 win over minnows Zorya on Thursday night.

Maddison was on target along with Harvey Barnes and Kelechi Iheanacho as Brendan Rodgers’ men began their Europa League campaign with a routine win – the first in Leicester’s history in this competition.

On their first European appearance since reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 2017, Leicester could have fallen behind in the 22nd minute here.

Vladlen Yurchenko released Maksym Lunov on the right and his low cross found Vladyslav Kabayev at the far post, forcing Kasper Schmeichel to make a fine save with his feet.

Leicester made the most of that escape by taking the lead seven minutes later. Barnes found space inside the box and curled against the post and Iheanacho was quickest to the loose ball, slipping it back for Maddison to poke into the unguarded net.

Leicester were dominant after half-time as Iheanacho wrapped the win for Brendan Rodger’s side.

The Foxes travel to the Emirates on Sunday for a Premier League clash.
