Wigan demolished Hull City with seven first-half goals to diminish the Tiger’s chances of survival in the Championship.
Wigan added one goal during the second half to register an incredible win at the DW Stadium.
Hull City came into the match at the back of a three-match losing streak that has dimmed their chances of survival in the Championship.
Kal Naismith opened the scoring in the second minute and set the tone in the one-side contest.
Naismith’s opener was followed by a brace from Kieffer Moore and Kieran Dowell. Jamal Lowe and Joe Williams also got on the scoresheet in the first half.
Dowell completed his hat-trick with the only goal of the second half.
The remarkable result is both Wigan’s biggest league win, surpassing a 7-0 victory against Oxford in 2017, and Hull’s joint-biggest league loss.
It left the Latics, with two games remaining, on 57 points, 12 points clear of 22nd place – occupied by Hull, who lay a point adrift of safety.
The fact that Wigan is facing a 12-point penalty – which they are appealing against – due to having gone into administration means they are now effectively sitting just outside the relegation zone, above Hull courtesy of their superior goal difference.
