Champions League and Europa League set for World Cup-style tournament

UEFA is planning to adopt a World Cup-style tournament that will see the culmination of the competitions.

This year’s Champions League and Europa League set for a different setup to wind up the remaining fixtures and eventually end the campaigns.

The European competitions were suspended back in March due to the coronavirus pandemic but with leagues in Europe either back in play or planning to resume, the competitions will also be back.

It is believed that UEFA is planning to adopt a World Cup style two-week tournaments to complete the 2019/20 campaigns.

Champions League was paused in March with Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid at Anfield the last tie
The World Cup style will see the remaining matches completed over a two-week period

The Champions League final was set to be hosted in Istanbul but with no fans allowed in the games, the likelihood of a new host is being fronted as the cost to have the final in Turkey no longer feasible.

Lisbon, Frankfurt and Moscow have been thought as probable cities to host the tournament.

The Europa League was heading to the last-16 second-legs when the games were suspended.

A conclusive decision will be made by UEFA on June 17 when the board will meet and discuss the probable options available.
