IFAB announces that teams will be allowed to make FIVE substitutions per match
- The International Board says teams will be allowed to make five subs
- The substitutions will happen over three breaks
- Move meant to help players from injuries and fatigue
The International Football Association Board will allow teams to make five substitutions per match.
With games set to resume, concern has been raised on the health and well-being of the players who will have to endure packed fixture schedules.
The Board, which governs the laws of the game, announced that teams will still only have three opportunities to make the five substitutions. This will ensure that the teams do not take advantage of the increased number of substitutes to waste time.
Where competition rules allow an additional substitution in extra time, then the teams will each be given an additional substitution.
IFAB also informed that competition organisers will be allowed to stop using Video Assisted Refereeing (VAR) when the games resume.
The VAR has been subject of controversy over the season with the system lauded and criticized in equal measures.
These decisions – increased number of substitutes and suspension of VAR, will be subject to the decision taken by the respective leagues.
LaLiga announced that they will adopt the new rules as soon as the games resume. Moreover, the management of the Spanish football are planning to have two water breaks in each game.
