Arsenal could feature in next year’s Champions League campaign if the current 2019/20 football calendar is not concluded.
The national member associations of European football’s governing body held a conference call on Tuesday. The meeting provided an update of various options available in seeing out this football calendar.
UEFA lay emphasis on the need for national associations to find a way to complete the league and cup competitions.
Should the Premier League fail to continue, Arsenal could find themselves in next season’s UEFA Champions League campaign.
Reports indicate that UEFA is being urged to order associations to use coefficient scores as a method for determining which teams play in which European competitions next season.
The coefficient is calculated on the results of clubs competing in the five previous seasons of the Champions League and Europa League.
Should this be adopted, the Gunners would climb from ninth position (where they currently sit) and move to fourth position, behind Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Tottenham, Chelsea and Leicester would have to make do with a place in the Europa League while Wolves and Sheffield United would miss out on continental football completely.
Although they have stressed their desire to see competitions concluded, UEFA has opened the door to domestic league and cup competitions being cancelled ‘in special cases’ due to the coronavirus pandemic.
