The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Kenya has increased by 4, to 42, on Sunday as the Ministry of Health commenced nationwide mass fumigation and disinfection exercise.

According to the Health Ministry, the four are a Kenyan, an American national, one from Cameroon and Burkina Faso from 69 samples tested on Saturday.

All patients have been isolated.

1,426 people who came into close contact with the 42 remain under close monitoring by the Ministry of Health said Mutahi Kagwe in his Sunday briefing.

“It is very likely and possible that going forward, our health facilities can be overrun and this is not a government issue alone. If in Italy and America with their facilities have been overran, is it hard to imagine this can happen in Kenya?” Health secretary Mutahi Kagwe warned.

Nairobi County continues to lead with 31 cases of those who have tested positive, followed by Kilifi with six, Mombasa with three, while Kajiado and Kwale with one each.

Out of the 42 positive cases, 24 are male while 18 are female.

Globally, Kagwe said, “As of yesterday (Saturday)  the global figures stood at 571, 678 of persons who have tested positive for Coronavirus while 26,494 have succumbed since the disease outbreak.”

“Yesterday alone within a period of 24 hours Italy reported 971 deaths while Spain recorded 769. The USA recorded a total of 16894 new cases with 252 deaths in a period of 24 hours.”
