The TIME magazine has named Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu, Ugandan politician Bobi Wine and South Sudanese model Adut Akech to its first-ever TIME 100 Next list.
TIME 100 Next says “ Wanuri has the vision, wild imagination and depth to deliver—and her films have a knack for casting a spell.” Wanuri made history as the first from Kenya to premiere a film, Rafiki, at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018.

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, Bobi Wine, the Ugandan singer-turned-politician who has been highly critical of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is also in the TIME100Next list.
He said: “This is exceedingly humbling. Dedicating this recognition to the young people of Uganda, esp the ghetto youth. May this be a reminder & encouragement that you’re not what your detractors say you are. You are what you choose to be!”

Other Africans include Nigeria’s Njideka Akunyili Crosby whose work has sold for millions at auctions across the world as well as Nigerian-Jamaican chef and restauranteur Kwame Onwuachi.
