“Diversity, I see in nature, different colours, different shapes, sizes, flowers, leaves, birds…and I just wonder in this collection. My question to everybody is why can’t we as humans live together, peacefully as nature does?
Deepa Dosaja, a globally-acclaimed Kenyan stylist spoke to Khusoko on what inspired her new Spring Summer 2020 Collection at Fairmont The Norfolk Hotel.
She was able to showcase fifteen of her design collections part of which was displayed at the Paris Fashion Week and then at the Hub of Africa Fashion Week in Addis Ababa.
“As a brand, we have always been environmentally and socially conscious, says Deepa who says her work is inspired by diversity drawn from nature and the abundance of colours therein as well as acceptance of an ethical obligation towards the environment.
“This to me means both using materials, fabrics that are natural, biodegradable as well as not using plastics that are not degradable,” she says.
As the fashion industry shifts towards more sustainable practices, Deepa says she is excited that the industry has finally realised their responsibility to the environment.
She says the industry is the second biggest polluter in the world and it is the responsibility of every designer in the world to take on the challenge.
“This challenge of designing beautiful and environmentally social, friendly fashion.”
From fine silks embellished with bold hand paints and hand embroidery Deepa says the African fashion industry has a lot of inspirations to learn from.
“I feel like, I really want growth within the African space, Kenyan designs because the world is looking at Africa. We have new designs, We have new colors, new inspirations. So much to give and I feel it is so wonderful to finally play a part.”
