Kenya’s Health Minister Mutahi Kagwe said the nationwide curfew came and containment measures have been extended for additional 30 days in an effort to curb the further spread of Covid-19.

According to CS Kagwe, the 30-day extension will also ensure the Government achieves its targeted mass Covid-19 vaccination program across the country.

The decision follows a meeting between the National Emergency Response Committee on Covid and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“This is for two reasons. Number one is that we are still as far as the positivity rate is concerned we are still above the WHO recommended figures in terms of two weeks period when you have got less than 5 per cent of positivity rate at a high testing level,” Kagwe said.

According to the ministry, Kenya is yet to hit the World Health Organisation recommended positivity rate of five per cent for a consistent period of 14 days.

In September, the ministry stepped up the COVID-19 vaccination with the rollout of a National accelerated vaccination campaign dubbed, “Kuwa shujaa pata chanjo tufungue nchi”.

The campaign targets to have 10 million vaccinations in the next three months, with a mid-term target of 5.8 million vaccinations by Mashujaa day celebrations on the 20th of October.
