• Italy beat England on penalties to clinch Euro 2020 trophy
  • Gianluigi Donnarumma saved three penalties to give the Italians the win over England

Italy beat England on penalties to be crowned European champions for a second time, ending a 53-year wait for glory in the European Championships.

The Italians had to come from behind after a strong start by England that saw Luke Shaw volley in a cross from Kieran Trippier to open the scoring in the 2nd minute of the game.

Roberto Mancini’s side gradually grew into the game but struggled in finding the final ball in the better part of the first half.

The Azzuri, however, began the second half the stronger of the two sides and had their efforts rewarded in the 66th minute as an Insigne corner was met by Marco Verratti before the ball deflected to Leonardo Bonucci, who smashed the ball into the England goal from close range.

With no further goals to add, the match went to extra time and again the two finalists struggled to create any meaningful chances which led the match to penalties.

Domenico Berardi scored the first penalty for the Italians before Harry Kane slotted in to pull England level.

Belotti had his effort saved by Pickford before Manchester United’s Harry Maguire put the hosts ahead.

Bonucci put his penalty past the Everton goalkeeper before substitute Marcus Rashford had his penalty go wide.

Juventus’ Bernardeschi slotted his effort before Donnarumma made his second save denying United-bound Jadon Sancho.

Chelsea’s Jorginho had his effort saved before Bukayo Saka had his penalty saved by Donnarumma – to crown Italy the European Champions.
