Italy are through to the Euro finals after beating Spain 2-1 on penalties.

The Azzuri booked their place at this year’s finals after an intense 120 minutes in which either side had not found the winner.

Federico Chiesa put the Italians ahead in the second half after a sensational counterattack that was started by the goalkeeper. Chiesa completed the move with a curled effort that Unai Simon could not get to.

Alvaro Morata, who started from the bench, came on to equalize for Luis Enrique’s side in the 80th minute after being fed by a clever pass from Dani Olmo.

The two sides pushed to get the winner in extra-time with Olmo almost putting the Spaniards ahead with a disguised free-kick whilst Italy’s Domenico Berardi having a goal ruled out for offside.

The match went to penalties where Donnaruma made two superb saves to keep out Olmo and Morata’s efforts before Chelsea’s Jorginho gave Roberto Mancini’s side the win.

The Azzuri will now face either England or Denmark for the finals this weekend.
