Kenya aims to vaccinate 26 million of every eligible citizen by the end of June 2022 and make the state free from COVID-19, said President Uhuru Kenyatta.

He was speaking Tuesday during his Sixteenth Presidential Address on Covid-19.

According to the Head of State, the initial plan was to vaccinate 10 million adults by June 2022.

“We will vaccinate the entire adult population of 26 million Kenyans by 2022. In fact, by Christmas this year, we intend to have vaccinated over 10 million adults. According to our experts, we will have built a capacity to vaccinate 150,000 people every day from August 2021,” said President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“And this accelerated plan will be aided by a few swift actions and bold programmes. For instance, we have ordered 10 million vaccines from Johnson and Johnson, with the first consignment arriving in Kenya in August 2021.

“And in the process of negotiating with this company, we managed to get a lower price. For the price of 10 million vaccines, we have negotiated for them to deliver 13 million vaccines,” he said.

His address to the nation came after the World Bank approved US$130 million (KSh14 billion) additional financing for the Kenya Covid-19 Health Emergency Response Project for the purchase of vaccines.

This brings the cumulative contribution to  S$246 million (KSh24.6 billion).

“This additional financing would enable Kenya to procure more vaccines via the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team (AVATT) initiative and the Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (Covax) facilities,” the World Bank said in a statement seen by Khusoko.

The Ministry of Health data shows that 1.3 million people had been vaccinated against the 16 million targeted for immunisation by June 2022.

Kenya’s total confirmed positive Covid-19 cases hit 183,603 Tuesday after 719 new infections were recorded. The new cases tested from a sample size of 7,608 had a positivity rate of 9.5 per cent pushing the total of cumulative tests conducted to 1,953,344.
