Atletico Madrid have won the La Liga title for the first time in seven years.
Atletico are champions of Spain for the 11th time in their history after Luis Suarez secured the club’s first league title in seven years.
Diego Simeone’s side had gone into the final day of the La Liga season two points ahead of city rivals Real Madrid, and they secured the title with a 2-1 victory at Valladolid.
Real came from behind to beat Villarreal 2-1, with the visitors warming up for Wednesday’s Europa League final against Manchester United with an impressive performance.
Atletico had surprisingly fallen behind to Valladolid, who finished bottom of the table and were relegated, when Oscar Plano gave the hosts a shock lead.
However, they took matters into their own hands when they drew level 12 minutes into the second half, as Angel Correa poked home from the edge of the box after impressive build-up play.
At almost exactly the same time, Real had an equaliser against Villarreal chalked off by VAR as Karim Benzema was denied.
With fortune smiling in Atletico, Suarez – who joined the club last summer after being jettisoned by Barcelona – raced clear following a dreadful back pass to fire home and put his side in front.
The league title success is Simeone’s second as Atletico boss, while he also won the league as a player with the club in 1996.
