Retailer Carrefour Kenya has replaced ShopRite as the anchor tenant at Garden City.

The South African based chain Shoprite ceased operations in Kenya last year.

The 3,572 metres squared operating space at Garden City becomes the 13 stores and 11 in Nairobi for the retailer in its expansion strategy.

The new outlet will operate as a Carrefour Market giving customers living close to the mall access to its WhatsApp ordering service, allowing them to shop online and have their products delivered directly to their door.

“Carrefour’s Click and Collect service — also accessed via WhatsApp — will be available from the new Garden City Mall location. Through Click and Collect, customers gain the flexibility and convenience of shopping online and deciding when to collect their order at a time that suits their schedule,” the retailer said in an e-mailed statement Thursday.

“The retailer is however leveraging on availability of quality retail space, and, affordability as their main reason for moving to Thika Road. The Thika Road average rent per SQM in Q1’2021 came in at Kshs 148 compared to the market average of Kshs 166,” Cytonn Investments says in a commentary.
