- Liverpool knocked out of the Champions League after flurry of missed chances
- Mohammed Salah and Liverpool fail to take opportunities to win tie
- Real Madrid will take on Chelsea in the semi-finals of this year’s coveted competition
Having lost the first leg 3-1 in Spain, Jurgen Klopp’s side knew they needed to score at least twice to advance to the semi-finals, and they had plenty of opportunities.
Mohamed Salah should have given the Reds the lead inside two minutes but could only fire straight at Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper also made a brilliant save to deny James Milner from range.
Salah had another chance shortly before the break but failed to effectively dig out a decent effort. Moments later, Georginio Wijnaldum made a complete hash of a clear shot at goal.
The visitors were very hard to break down in the second half and arguably came closer than Liverpool to breaking the deadlock late on but Karim Benzema mistimed his free header.
Zinedine Zidane’s side will now take on Chelsea in the semi-finals – the winner will take on the eventual winners of Manchester City’s clash against PSG.
