The Communication Authority of Kenya on Tuesday launched the 2021 Kuza Awards, which will be the fourth edition of the annual event.

This would have been the 5th edition, however, the 2020 awards were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The awards seek to recognise excellence in broadcasting in Kenya.

“The theme for the Kuza Awards 2020 is Preserving Our Heritage through broadcasting: Kenya a heritage of splendour,” said CA Director-General, Mercy Wanjau.

The Kuza Awards are categorised into the regulatory award, people’s choice award and patriotic award. In the People’s Choice Awards, audiences can vote at no cost, for their preferred station via mobile SMS shortcode number 15601.

Three categories were also introduced to the awards, namely copyright, patriotism and upcoming broadcaster.

The Patriotic Award will fete individuals/entities that have made a positive impact through broadcasting in preserving national heritage, unity and cohesion. The Upcoming Broadcaster Award will recognize new broadcasters who are complying with the regulatory requirements while the Copyright Award seeks to enhance adherence by broadcasters to Copyright and Intellectual Property requirements.

The jury will be comprised of: The Kenya Film Commission, Media Council of Kenya, Kenya Copyright Board, Nationa Commission and Integration Commission, The Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek), Reelforge Analytics, Bulk SMS Services Ltd, Television and Radio Listener Association.

The awards come at a time when the Communication Authority is seeking to issue compliance certificates to broadcasters who meet all the license conditions and other regulatory requirements and acknowledge broadcasters who promote patriotism, uphold Kenyan culture, beliefs and values and who have made a contribution towards national unity and cohesion.

The 2021 Kuza Awards Gala is scheduled for May this year.
