Manchester City move to fifth after beating Newcastle 2-0 as Tyrone Mings sees red in Villa’s 3-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Goals in each half from Ilkay Gundogan and Ferran Torres during a Manchester monsoon saw City rise to fifth on Boxing Day night.

The home side went ahead in the 14th minute when Gundogan calmly fired home Raheem Sterling’s pass from close range after a typically patient and incisive build-up from Pep Guardiola’s side.

A concerted attack that ebbed and flowed across the field ended when Newcastle defender Federico Fernandez could only deflect a cross from Joao Cancelo into the path of Ferran Torres, who scored with a simple finish.

Elsewhere, ten-man Aston Villa put three goals past Crystal Palace at Villa Park.

Tyrone Mings saw red in the first half for a second bookable offence but that did not deter the Villains from picking the win.

Traore gave Villa the lead in the fifth minute before Tyrone Mings got his marching orders at the end of first half. Hause and El Ghazi ensured the win in second half to leave them sixth in the table.

A solitary goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson late in the match gave Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton side a 1-0 win over Sheffield United.

League action resumes on Sunday with league leaders Liverpool entertaining West Brom at Anfield. Leeds take on Burnley as West Ham invite Brighton at the London Stadium.

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham travel to Wolves.
